Portrait of Tony Smith

Professor Tony Smith, Professor of Oral Biology and Director of Research at the School of Dentistry, University of Birmingham.

Tony Smith leads an active research group on pulp biology and regeneration. He has a long term research programme focussed on cell behaviour in the dentine-pulp complex and is interested in the modulation of cell behaviour during tissue regeneration and engineering and in response to dental restorative procedures. His experience in the dentine-pulp field extends over 25+ years and he has published widely in the area. In 2004, he was awarded the IADR Distinguished Scientist in Pulp Biology award and was President of the IADR Pulp Biology research group in 2004/2005 and Association of basic Science Teachers in Dentistry during 2002-2005. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Dental Research.

Portrait of Roy Russel

Professor RRB Russell, Professor of Oral Biology, School of Dental Sciences, University of Newcastle upon Tyne

Roy Russell graduated in Bacteriology from Trinity College, Dublin and after several years working in Australia and Canada joined the Royal College of Surgeons of England to work on a dental caries vaccine. In 1991 he was appointed Professor of Oral Biology at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. His research interests are concerned with the molecular genetics of Streptococcus mutans and he teaches oral microbiology on the BDS course. He served on the QAA Benchmarking Panel for Dentistry and is currently President of the Association of Basic Science Teachers in Dentistry. His talk will cover recent developments in his field and considers how we can cover a rapidly-changing knowledge base in the curriculum.

Portrait of Michael Manogue

Dr. Michael Manogue - Director of Learning and Teaching at the Leeds Dental Institute

Michael Manogue has been Director of Learning and Teaching at the Leeds Dental Institute since April 2004. A radically different undergraduate dental curriculum was introduced there in September of the same year. The curriculum integrates science and clinical practice from the outset and is driven by clinical learning experiences. Michael is the programme manager.
He is also a National Teaching Fellow and is researching the attributes that determine admission to dental school. His PhD was on clinical assessment in dentistry, with particular reference to the objective structured clinical examination. He has lectured internationally on the subject.

Portrait of Peter Harrison

Dr Peter Harrison, Dublin University

Dr Peter Harrison obtained his dental degree from Dublin University in 2002. He has subsequently practiced in general dental practice in London and Dublin. He is currently an SHO in Dublin Dental Hospital. He has worked for two years in Dublin Dental Hospital as a problem-based learning tutor. Peter will provide an insight into problem-based learning from the perspective of both a student and tutor.

Portrait of Iain Pretty

Dr Iain A Pretty, Specialist Registrar in Restorative Dentistry, University of Manchester

Iain is a senior lecturer and specialist registrar in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Manchester. His primary research interest is in the application of novel diagnostic systems to help reduce the time and cost of clinical trials for caries. Iain is a Department of Health Career Scientist and has authored numerous papers and book chapters on caries, erosion and diagnostic imaging science in dentistry

Portrait of David Ricketts

David Ricketts, Senior Lecturer / Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry, Dundee Dental School, University of Dundee, Scotland

David Ricketts qualified at Guys Hospital Dental School, now GKT Kings College, in 1986. Following an Oral Surgery post and two years in General Practice he returned to Guys to study for an MSc in Conservative Dentistry under the tutelage of Prof Bernard Smith. During this his interest in Cariology, and in particular caries diagnosis and its appropriate management began. A research project on clinical and radiographic detection of occlusal caries led on to a PhD, supervised by Prof Edwina Kidd, on electrical conductance methods for occlusal caries detection. In 1999 David moved to Dundee and continues research into novel techniques for caries detection and assessment, and has completed a Cochrane systematic review which challenges the traditional method of management of caries, by complete caries removal and restoration. Alternative methods of sealing caries into a tooth, and treating the lesion from a micro biological point of view have been evaluated.

Portrait of Michael O'Sullivan

Dr Michael O'Sullivan, Senior Lecturer/ Consultant in Restorative Dentistry (Special Needs) Department of Restorative Dentistry & Periodontology Dublin Dental School

Michael is a Senior Lecturer Consultant in Restorative Dentistry (Special Needs) at the Dublin Dental School & Hospital. His primary area of clinical interest is the treatment of patients with developmental dental anomalies such as hypodontia, amelogenesis imperfecta and dentinogenesis imperfecta.
